As of July 17, 2024, the IRS has implemented enhanced identity authentication measures for financial institutions and U.S. taxpayers registering under the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA).
These changes are designed to increase the security of your financial information and ensure compliance with the latest digital identity guidelines.
Key Updates:
#1 Mandatory Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)
Starting July 14, all users must establish multi-factor authentication to access the FATCA Registration System.
This step enhances security by requiring two forms of identification.
#2 Credential Service Providers
You will need to sign in or register with one of the IRS’s credential service providers, Login.gov or ID.me.
If you already have a profile with either service, you can use it to sign in as long as your email matches that of the responsible officer or point of contact on the FATCA registration.
#3 Creating a New Profile
If you do not have a Login.gov or ID.me profile, you will need to create one.
The process includes:
Verifying your email address
Creating a password
Setting up multi-factor authentication
Both Login.gov and ID.me provide help desks to assist you if you encounter any issues during the registration process.
Why This Matters
These changes are part of the IRS’s ongoing efforts to protect your financial information and comply with the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) digital identity guidelines.
By implementing MFA, the IRS aims to provide an additional layer of security against unauthorized access and potential fraud.
What to Do Now
For Existing Users:
1. If you already have a Login.gov or ID.me profile, ensure that your email matches the one used for FATCA registration.
2. Sign in with your existing credentials and complete the MFA setup if not already done.
For New Users:
1. Create a profile with either Login.gov or ID.me.
2. Follow the steps to verify your email, create a password, and set up multi-factor authentication.
We encourage you to take action promptly to ensure uninterrupted access to the FATCA Registration System.
